Pre-pregnancy counselling

Pre-pregnancy planning is the first step to a healthy pregnancy. Your Obstetrician can review your general health and give you advise on how to best optimise your health before falling pregnant.

Pregnancy

Dr Jason Chew and Dr Vicki Yin both deliver privately at Mitcham Private Hospital, Dr Chew also has admitting rights at St Vincent’s Private Hospital. For your first Obstetrician’s visit, you will require a referral from your GP.

Obstetrician visits

Your first Obstetrician visit is generally scheduled between 6 and 10 weeks. This will be a detailed visit understanding your pregnancy so far and your general health.  An ultrasound will be performed at this visit to view your baby’s heart beat. Please bring along any recent scans and blood test reports.

Your subsequent Obstetrician visits will be tailored to your needs. Generally this will be every 4 – 6 weeks until 28 weeks, then every 2 weeks until 36 weeks and then weekly thereafter.

You will also see your Obstetrician at 6 weeks after the delivery of your baby to ensure you have recovered well from your delivery.

Midwife visits

MyO&G has dedicated midwives. Our midwives are here to help you answer any questions and provide you with extra support throughout your pregnancy. Midwife visits are an adjunct to antenatal classes and allow a more individualised care to your pregnancy.

Suggested midwife visits include: 16 – 18 weeks, 26 – 28 weeks and 34 – 36 weeks. Additional visits may be arranged on your request.

A focus on holistic care

Contacts during pregnancy

Your Obstetrician is your main care provider throughout your pregnancy. Not only do they review you and your baby’s health during each visit, they also remain on stand-by for you should you require urgent attention. It’s easy to get in contact with your Obstetrician:

  • Business hours (8am to 6pm Monday to Friday), you can call the rooms on (03) 9874 2333

  • After-hours, weekends and public holidays, you can call our call service on (03) 9387 1000

If you are in labour or need to be seen urgently after-hours, please ring the hospital where you are booked to have your baby. The hospital will inform your Obstetrician after making an initial assessment. If you have a medical emergency and need an ambulance, you are advised to call 000.

Dr Chew and Dr Yin work closely to ensure you receive the best care you need. If the matter is urgent and your Obstetrician is not available, the other will provide cover. Weekend cover is shared among several other Specialist Obstetricians at Mitcham Private Hospital including Dr Sophie Leong, Dr Geoff McCallum, Dr Hema Grover, Dr Virochana Kaul and Dr Sugandha Kumar. Leave is generally planned well in advance, and cover arrangement will be in place to ensure the highest quality care is maintained for you at all times.

Should your care needs arise, your Obstetrician may refer you to other specialists during your pregnancy (such as an endocrinologist if you develop gestational diabetes, or a lactation consultant if you have issues with breastfeeding).
